question for softball (slow pitch) catchers?
I’m male & am going to play catcher for a slow pitch softball team this year.
What gear – if any – do you use? I’m not sure any defending gear is really mandatory – but just wondering if any would be not compulsory.
Same business with the mitt….do you just use a fixed ol’ softball glove – or are there only one of its kind catchers mitts for softball?

You have the option of by gear or a catchers mit, but it isn’t required. I would urge a cup and a batting helmet (or catcher’s helmet lacking the mask)–the rest is unnecessary. You can use a fixed fielding glove (and doubtless should, in view of the fact that you’ve never used a catcher’s mit). The rest of that stuff will just make you hot–the ball isn’t coming quick ample to really hurt you, just look out for the bat and the rare foul tip.
A slow pitch catcher is pretty much just the ball return for the pitcher. On many teams, the pitcher kicks the catcher off the plate and takes any plays at home. On some top teams, you’ll see the catcher run to back up initially base on a hit to shortstop or shallow outfield. On of poorer quality teams, it is the position that is simplest to take in (except ball return duties) by the other nine players, so it is the place to place the weakest link.
Nothing only one of its kind. Just use your fixed glove, same business you would use for any other position.
You should use your same glove only in view of the fact that it’s harder to bump the 12" ball with a catcher’s glove.
No other gear is necessary. Naturally the catcher doesn’t have to kneel down down either. It’s simpler to answer to a foul ball if you are just standing behind the plate, with your knees a modest bent.
I trapped years ago, don’t recall whatever business but my glove, which I’d bought to play the outfield. Whatever business hitting the plate was a called strike, I was there primarily to fetch balls at which the hit did not offer, or to make the rare play at the plate. But, some leagues may demand gear, in view of the fact that of the liability if you get hit by a foul (dodgy) or by the bat.
